Pretty flowers die
as tiny bean pods emerge—
spring has done its job.

Pretty flowers die
as tiny bean pods emerge—
spring has done its job.

Filters through dense fog:
little rebel winter sun,
springs into wattle.

Sorry you’re dying
beautiful little flower;
say hi to my mum.

The older cousin,
springing ahead of season—
other acacia.

Fun fact: There are at least 1,000 types of acacia native to Australia. Acacia pycnantha or the Golden Wattle (not the one pictured) is Australia’s national flower, and Wattle Day is celebrated on the 1st of September, the first day of the Australian spring. The Golden Wattle blooms in spring but some other types of wattle flower through winter.
