All these apps ask you to filter your views of nature, as if looking at it directly can harm your vision. On the contrary, filters filter out the awe of real beauty, masking imperfections, correcting (subjectively) mistakes that you wish you hadn’t made, when in fact mistakes themselves are so subjective. Yes there’s a glare in the photograph. But that’s not because I’m not skilled enough to hide it, but because hiding it would mean hiding the story of how it feels to look at the brilliant sun through a thick fog that refuses to lift. It’s marvellous, a little prickly on the eyes, and yet so fascinating. It’s a journey by itself. Don’t filter that out for the sake of a so-called perfect shot.

The greatest thing about nature: you don’t necessarily have to be in it to be into it.

If it’s a long walk to the ocean, it’s bound to be good.
